Tom Neuwirth Early Biography

Tom Neuwirth was born on November 6, 1988 in the Austrian city of Gmunden . He spent his childhood in a small village with 3 thousand inhabitants of Bad Mitterndorf in Styria [6] [7] [8] . From an early age, Tom showed interest in women's clothing, and as a teenager noticed that he was attracted to men [7] . At 17, he made a cuming out [9] [10] [11] . In 2006, 18-year-old Tom Neuwirth took part in the third season of the Austrian casting show for beginner pop singers Starmania , in which he took second place, losing first to Nadine Beiler [8] . In 2007, he became a member of the “Jetzt anders!” Boy band , which, however, lasted only a few months [6] [8] [13] .

The idea of ​​a bearded Latino woman came to Neuvirt due to the fact that in his teens he was faced with discrimination and bullying. The image of Conchita Wurst has become a statement in defense of tolerance and acceptance of a person as he is. Tom Neuwirth said that he wants the new generation to believe that it’s good to be yourself, that it’s important for people not just what the person looks like or where he comes from, but what kind of person it is, so that people learn to look at and appreciate what what is hidden "behind the facade" [14] [18] .

... He created a woman with a beard. Like a bright saying. As a catalyst for discussions about concepts such as “otherness” and “normality”. As a way to convey your message to the whole world so that it was impossible not to see or not to hear. After all, appearance, gender and origin do not matter when it comes to the dignity and freedom of the individual. “Only and exclusively important is the person,” says Tom / Conchita, “everyone should have the right to live as he sees fit, if it does no harm to anyone.”

Publications of The New Yorker and Siegessäule note that the image of Conchita Wurst is an example of the so-called gender joke , expressed in the refusal to follow traditional gender roles [19] [20] . The Conchita created by him allows you to share creativity and quiet personal life. Conchita can say things that he could never say like Tom [29] . According to Neuwirth, Conchita is his alter ego , therefore, being in the image of Frau Wurst, he demands that he be addressed in exactly this way, namely “she”; however, in relation to Tom, only “he” should be used [29] [30] . Neuwirth notes that Conchita even goes to the women's bathroom, while Tom only to the men's room [30] . The existence of two personalities has long been accustomed to friends and relatives of Tom [29] . However, Neuwirth notes that, for example, visiting his parents he is exclusively Tom, because Frau Wurst would be out of place there [29] .

Konchita’s beard is real, but to enhance the effect, it is additionally tinted with eye shadow. Long hair is created using an ordinary wig , and the chest is push-up [6] [27] . Neuwirth himself repeatedly in his interviews explained the meaning of the pseudonym by referring to the stable German expression wurst sein , which means "to be indifferent, indifferent" [33] and in this context means that the appearance and origin of a person does not matter [6] [30] . In addition, the word Wurst in German means sausage . According to the German-language press, there are opinions on the Internet that Wurst can refer to the male genital organ , while the Spanish word conchita is a vulgar designation of the female vagina , so the name "Conchita Wurst" is a verbal combination of male and female [6] [ 34] .

According to pseudobiography, Conchita was named after her grandmother, and her father was named Alfred Knack von Wurst ( German: Alfred Knack von Wurst ) [28] .

Eurovision 2014

Path to Eurovision

In 2012, Conchita Wurst participated in the national selection for Eurovision 2012 with the song “ That's What I Am ”, where she finished second in the finals (gaining 49% of the vote), only slightly losing to the hip hop duo Trackshittaz (51%). A heated debate broke out in the country over the participation of the travesty artist in the contest, which often resulted in openly homophobic insults. Moreover, opponents of the participation of Conchita Wurst in the contest rarely touched on the theme of music and directed the negative mainly on the personality and image of the artist [36] . The Austrian musician and comedian Alf Poyer , who himself represented Austria at Eurovision 2003 , said that if someone does not know whether he is a man or a woman, then his place is in a psychiatric hospital, and not at Eurovision [36] . The head of the Freedom Party, Heinz-Christian Strache praised Poyer for his “courageous opinion” [36] . The points obtained during the voting were added up to 50% of the points of the national jury and 50% of the points of viewers. In the combined result, Conchita received a maximum of 12 points immediately from 13 countries - Belgium, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Great Britain [46] .

A large margin from the participants from the Netherlands , who took second place, was obtained due to SMS- voting of viewers. If only the votes of viewers were taken into account, the success of Austria would be even more distinct: Austria - 306 points, the Netherlands - 220 points, Armenia - 187 points. If only the points put down by the jury were taken into account, Austria would have received only 214 points, however, in this situation, would have remained the winner - the Netherlands in this case would have 200 and Sweden - 199 points [47] [48] .

According to the rules of the contest, points are awarded only to performers who are in the top ten ranking. Therefore, the largest gap in the assigned points between the choice of the jury and the choice of viewers was in Germany (the jury - 0 points, viewers - 12 points), Armenia (the jury - 0 points, viewers - 10 points) and in Malta (the jury - 2 points, viewers - 12 points) [49] . And the largest gaps in the places were observed in Armenia (the jury - 24th place, viewers - 2nd place) and in Azerbaijan (jury - 24th place, viewers - 3rd place) [50] .

A number of observers noted that despite the widespread opinion about the strong influence of xenophobic attitudes and “traditional values” in Eastern Europe, its residents rated Conchita Wurst rather high, and low scores in these countries came from the jury. For example, Russian viewers gave Austria third place [19] [51] [52] [53] , and the song “ Rise Like a Phoenix ” even for some time topped the Russian music rating iTunes and Yandex.Music [54] [55] .

Conchita Wurst Victory Reactions

The victory of Austria was criticized by conservative politicians in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. It was called a sign of sunset, decline and degradation of Europe, propaganda of blurring the boundaries between a man and a woman and cultural aggression [64] . In Russia, many politicians also said that the image of Conchita Wurst is a propaganda of homosexuality and moral corruption [65] [66] [67] .

The head of the Synodal Information Department of the Russian Orthodox Church, Vladimir Legoyda, stated that the Wurst victory is another “link in the chain of cultural legitimization of vice in the modern world” and “an attempt to consolidate new cultural norms” [68] . Metropolitan of the Serbian Orthodox Church Amfilohij called the flood in the Balkans “God's punishment” for the victory of Conchita Wurst, although the most affected by the flood Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina did not participate in Eurovision. In the summer of 2014, Conchita Wurst performed at gay parades in London on Trafalgar Square [75] , Madrid [76] , Zurich [77] and Stockholm [78] [79] , Antwerp [80] . On October 19, 2018, the release of the second studio album, entitled From Vienna with Love , took place in the recording of which the Vienna Symphony Orchestra accepted. The disc consists of cover versions of various lyric songs [92] . The album was also able to rise to the top of Austria's album chart.

In 2019, Neuwirth said that he will now separate the characters, Conchita will continue the feminine style of performance, while a new character will appear under the name Wurst, who will look like a man and behave brutally, the singer also added that he will soon release new music. The single "Trash All The Glam" was released on March 8, 2019. Soon followed by a second single, titled “Hit Me,” which he dedicated to his ex-boyfriend, from whom he received threats about how he would publicly reveal his HIV-positive status. The third single, “See Me Now,” was released on April 5, 2019. All of these tracks will be included in the Truth Over Magnitude album, which will be released in 2019 [93] .

In April 2018, Tom Neuwirth on the Conchita Wurst Instagram page stated that he had been living with HIV for several years and was undergoing appropriate therapy .
