Biography
Born into a noble family , a hereditary aristocrat , a relative of the famous Russian naval commander [2] . Grandson of Major General A. Essen, brother of E.E. Essen [3] .
In 1898-1904 studied at St. Petersburg State University of Railway Engineering [4] .
Since 1899 he took part in the student movement , and since 1902 - in social democratic organizations. In 1902 he joined the RSDLP , after the Second Party Congress (1903) - the Bolshevik .
Member of the Boer War of 1899-1902 among the Russian volunteers [2] .
Member of Yekaterinoslavsky (1903), Petersburg (1903-05), Odessa (1904), Moscow (1904 and 1906) party committees.
