Memory

The command memorial of N. M. Kurnosov is held annually in Moscow [4]

An important role in rallying locomotives to a single and strong team belongs to N. M. Kurnosov, the senior trainer of the center of the DSO Lokomotiv, now deserved coach of the USSR. Nikolai Matveyevich was not listed as an outstanding master, he almost did not take part in competitions on the stocktaking board. But, possessing pedagogical flair and tact, N. M. Kurnosov recognized in his young novice athlete his inherent strengths and weaknesses of character.

The international grandmaster V. Schegolev in his book “From beginner to champion” (ed. “Physical Culture and Sport”, M., 1969) recalls how he, fascinated by checkers, completely started his studies at school. In the third quarter of the tenth grade, four deuces appeared in the sheet at once. Previously, never twos for a quarter was not. Kurnosov tried to explain to Glory that study was necessary, but when he saw that the guy did not touch the conversation, he forbade him to appear at the club until he corrected the marks. Of course, there was a danger: Shchegolev, who had already tasted the fruits of victory in various competitions, could take offense from his youth and go into another society. Unfortunately, this has happened. But the coach managed to recognize his student, believed in him.

Vyacheslav Ivanovich also recalls the period of preparation for the championship, the world, when the coach gently but persistently pointed out the errors in the game of the young draftsman and found measures to eliminate them.

If in the first post-war years the priority in checkers belonged to the railroad workers of Leningrad, then with the arrival of N. M. Kurnosov the leading position passed to the Muscovites.
