Botanical Description

The russet is yellowish. Botanical illustration from a book by O. V. Tome Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz , 1885

An annual herbaceous plant 5–40 cm high. The stems are trihedral, smooth, gathered in bunches. The leaves are linear, 1-2 mm wide, sharp. Spikelets are compressed, linearly oblong, 6-10 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, bunched into a single spherical or hemispherical inflorescence with 2-3 noticeably larger covering leaves exceeding its length. Covering scales about 2 mm long, widely elliptical, blunt at the end, with a short thin pointed tip, yellowish or dark brown with a green keel. Stamens 3, stigma 2. The fruit is a nutlet, biconvex, almost round, about 1 mm long.

Blossoms in July-August, bears fruit in August-September [3] .

Distribution and habitat

Within the range, it lives on silty, sandy shores of water bodies, marshy places, ruts of small roads, ravine bottoms. It is widespread in Russia in the non-chernozem zone: it is noted for the Bryansk, Vladimir, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kostroma, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Smolensk, Tver regions. Also noted in the Lipetsk, Tambov and Kursk regions.

The limiting factors are the narrow ecological amplitude of the species near the border of the range. Destruction of habitats during hydro construction, land reclamation, with the expansion of recreational areas and increased load on them [3] .
