A constitutional referendum in Mauritania was held on July 12, 1991 to approve the new Constitution of the country. The 1991 constitution included the introduction of a multi-party system, a bicameral parliament. In addition, the 1991 Constitution lifted restrictions on the number of presidential terms. [1] The constitution was approved by an overwhelming majority of 98%, with a turnout of 85%.
