Sarmatian rdest [2] ( lat. Potamogéton sarmáticus ) is a perennial herb ; a species of the genus Rdest ( Potamogeton ) of the family Rdestovye ( Potamogetonaceae ).

Botanical Description

An aquatic rooting tuber-forming vegetatively movable perennial up to 50 cm high. The stem is thin, branched, in the upper part is cranked. Submerged leaves are dull, elliptically or oblong-lanceolate, with an implicit pointed point, tapered tapered at the base, sessile or with a very short winged petiole ; finely serrated edges; with 7–13 (15) longitudinal veins, of which the median and main lateral veins are bordered by a strip of lacunae. Floating leaves (if any) are elliptical, thin, half-skinned, pale green, dull, almost without petioles, rosette-like. Stipules on the main stem with 2 keels, on the lateral stems almost without keels. Peduncles slightly thickened up. Inflorescences 2-3 cm long. Fruits are greenish-brown, up to 3 mm, with an unclear keel [3] .

Blossoms and bears fruit in May-June. Withstands sharp fluctuations in the level of habitat flooding. In dry years, stored in the form of fruits and tubers in the ground.

Distribution and habitat

East European-West Asian species, endemic flora of the former USSR.

  • in Russia: a rare species of the European part of Russia, known in the Lipetsk, Tambov, Voronezh, Volgograd, Rostov regions and in Tatarstan .
  • in the world: the south of Ukraine , Kazakhstan [3] .

Limiting factors are natural fluctuations in the level of groundwater, leading to drying out and rapid overgrowing of the wetland tall grass between the river and terraced depressions. Limited distribution in the area of ​​habitats suitable for the growth of the species, and a reduction in their number as a result of land reclamation and plowing of saline sites on the watersheds [3] .

Guard Status

In Russia

In Russia, the species is included in the Red Books of the Voronezh and Lipetsk regions, as well as the republics of Kalmykia and Tatarstan [2] .

It grows in the Khopersky Reserve [4] .

In Ukraine

By decision of the Lugansk Regional Council No. 32/21 of December 3, 2009, the species is included in the “ List of Regionally Rare Plants of the Lugansk Region ” [5] [6] .
