Wikipedia Zero is a Wikimedia Foundation project whose goal is to provide free access to Wikipedia from mobile Internet devices [1] [2] . The main goal of the project is to overcome the barrier between free knowledge, on the one hand, and the cost of access to this knowledge, on the other. A project is being implemented in the form of cooperation between the Wikimedia Foundation and various mobile operators , which in exchange for the right to use the Wikipedia trademark in their promotions, provide their subscribers with free access to the mobile version of Wikipedia. In 2013, the project received an award in the nomination "Activism" in the framework of the festival " South by Southwest " ( Austin , USA ) [3] .
Preparations for the launch of the project began in 2012 [4] . The project was launched in April 2012 in Uganda in cooperation with the mobile operator Orange [5] , in October 2012 the project was launched in Thailand and Saudi Arabia in cooperation with telecom operators DTAC and Saudi Telecom, respectively [6] . In 2013, the project was launched in Pakistan with the Mobilink operator [6] , in Sri Lanka with the Dialog operator [7] , in India with the Aircel operator [8] , in Jordan with Umniah , in the Russian Federation with the Beeline operator [9] .
