He studied at Yale University, where he won the US student championship in 1919 and 1920. In the US Championship in 1920, took 2nd place and thus hit the Olympic team. At the Olympics, he met Alice Lord , who performed diving from a 10-meter platform, they married in 1922. The 1921 United States Champion Indoor with a result of 1.85 meters. On January 31, 1923, at a competition in New York, he set a world indoor record of 1.96 meters.
