Clash over Tehran

Airplane

The Tu-154M with the serial number 91A-903 and serial 0903 was released by the Aviacor plant in 1991 and under the hull number CCCP-85721 was transferred to the USSR Ministry of Civil Aviation , which sent it to the 1st Kuybyshevsky United Aviation Administration of the Civil Aviation Authority. By August 1992, the airliner was sold to Iranian airline Iran Air Tours , with the tail number changed to EP-ITD [1] [2] .

Catastrophe

The airliner served an unscheduled domestic flight from Tehran to Mashhad . Onboard there were 12 crew members and 119 passengers. At about 14:16, the Tu-154 took off from runway 29R of the Mehrabad airport in Tehran and began to climb. At the same time, the Su-24 bomber of the Iranian Air Force (in some sources, the Su-22 ), which was piloted by a crew of 2 people, landed on the landing strip 29L. At 15 kilometers from the airport, the airliner and bomber crashed into each other. Having lost control, both cars fell to the ground, while all 131 people on board the Tu-154 and 2 on board the Su-24 died [1] [3] .

In total, 133 people died in the crash. At the time of the events, it was the largest air crash in Iran . For 2013 - the third.
