The Internet in Australia first appeared in 1989 [n 1] at universities through the AARNet network [1] [2] [3] . Soon after, commercial dial-up Internet access was organized in major cities [4] , and by the mid-1990s, almost the entire country had a wide choice of dial-up providers [5] .
In the late 1990s, carriers first introduced ADSL broadband access .
Currently, Australia uses a wide range of technologies to access the Internet, mainly hybrid optical-coaxial networks , xDSL , ISDN and Satellite Internet .
In July 2009, the Australian Government, together with industry representatives, began the introduction of fiber optic networks [6] .
