ALIWEB ( Archie Like Indexing for the WEB ) is considered the first search engine , while its predecessors were either built for other purposes ( Wandex , Gopher ), or were only indexers ( Archie search engine and Jughead ).
The system was announced in November 1993 [1] by developer Martin Koster while working at Nexor and presented in May 1994 [2] at the First International World Wide Web Conference at CERN in Geneva . Aliweb ahead of WebCrawler for several months [3] .
Aliweb allowed users to specify the location of the database on their sites [3] [4] , which allowed the search engine to include user pages in the search results, add page descriptions and keywords written by the user. This made it possible for webmasters to form a description for a specific target audience that would get on their pages through Aliweb. Aliweb was not a widely used system.
Martin Koster, who also played an important role in creating a standard of exceptions for robots [5] [6] , clarified information about the system and the purpose of Aliweb with an overview of its functions and structure during its report at CERN [2] .
Bonfire is not associated with a commercial site that uses the name Aliweb [7] .
