DescriptionThe total length reaches 10-15 cm, weight - 0.1 kg. Sexual dimorphism is observed: females are larger than males. The head is wide, thick. The mouth is very large. Males have a large throat sac with which they make loud noises during the mating season. The back is covered with a dense bone shield. The skin is bubbly, with a lot of small spines. Coloring varies from delicate lime green to pink-brown. Large convex spots are located on the back, which in some individuals can be extended into small stripes. The color of the spots varies from olive green to dark brown, almost black.
DistributionIt lives in Argentina, Bolivia, in the west of Brazil, in Paraguay.
LifestylePrefers moist forests along the banks of ponds, marshy places. It occurs at an altitude of up to 700 m above sea level. Leads a terrestrial lifestyle. Active at night. Leisurely animal. Hunting from an ambush. Pretty voracious; her stomach makes up two-thirds of her body. It feeds on chicks, frogs, small reptiles, invertebrates, even representatives of its species. In the fasting period, you can even eat your own skin.
Mating and breeding occurs during the rainy season. The female lays 2,000-4,000 eggs.
