Biography
Jewell was born in London , under the name Sally Roffie, daughter of Anna (née Murphy) and Peter Roffie [4] [5] . Sally's family moved to the United States when she was four years old. The reason for this was that her father, an anesthesiologist , received a scholarship from the University of Washington [6] .
In 1973 she graduated , and in 1978 received a degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University.
Since 1978, Jewell has worked for the Mobil oil company in oil fields in Oklahoma , and later worked for .
She worked in the banking sector for about twenty years. In 1996 she became a member of the REI Board, in 2000 she was appointed Chief Operating Officer. In 2005, she became Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ). [6]
Jewell was a member of the councils of , , and the board of the University of Washington. [7]
In 2009, Jewell won the Rachel Carson National Society Award. This award is given to visionary women whose knowledge has helped make a significant contribution at the local and national levels. [eight]
In 2006, Jewell was named CEO of the Year by the . [9]
February 6, 2013 Jewell was nominated by Barack Obama for the post of US Secretary of the Interior . [7] . The appointment was approved by the US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on March 21 . [ten]
On April 10, 2013, the Senate approved Jewell as Minister of the Interior. [eleven]
Personal life
Jewell is married, she has two grown children, they live in Seattle . [7]
In his free time, Jewel enjoys snowboarding and kayaking . She also climbed Vinson Massif , the highest mountain in Antarctica . [12] [13]
