Biography

John Chapek is a native of Prague, where he was born in 1946 in the family of a pianist. His mother was one of the surviving prisoners of Auschwitz . When the boy was three years old, his family moved to Melbourne (Australia). As a child, John learned to play the piano. His idols of this time were Little Richard , Ray Charles and Chuck Berry . After playing for some time in local rock bands, Czapek and friends founded Carson in 1970, which later became one of the most popular blues bands in Australia. After graduating from the Royal Melbourne Technological University in 1971 with a degree in chemical engineering, Chapek began teaching. Leaving the Carson group, he performs in these years in the groups King Harvest, Flite and Hanagan.

In 1973, Capek moved to Toronto (Canada). In Canada, he writes songs and accompanies popular local artists such as Mark Jordan , Ian Thomas , Dan Hill , Dianna Brooks , Ken Tobias , Amy Sky and The Good Brothers and Downchild . Having worked with Jordan, who composed the words for his songs, Chapek moved to the United States in 1979, where he composed music for Rod Stewart , Joe Cocker , Diana Ross and Manhattan Transfer . As a keyboard player, he collaborates with producers Umberto Gatica and John Boylan, including releasing Indaba's first own album in 1991.

Returning to Canada in 1995, Chapek nonetheless continues to write music for American stars: Rod Stewart, Cher , Bonnie Raitt , also collaborating with popular Canadian singer Amanda Marshall . He was director of the Canadian Composer-Songwriters Association and the Canada Composer-Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2005, he became one of the founders of the Department of Song Music at the Royal Toronto Conservatory of Music .
