Before the arrival of the Europeans, the area on which the park is now located was represented by rocks and outcrops of rocks left over from the prehistoric glacier . The population of the Indians in this area was insignificant. In 1846, a railroad was laid along the Hudson River. In 1865, a member of the Central Park Arrangement Commission, William Martin, proposed breaking up a park on the Upper West Side. In 1867, the authorities in New York bought the land between the railway and the rocks, and in 1873 it was decided to break up the park in this area. The section of Riverside Park between 72nd and 125th streets was built from 1875 to 1900. Among the landscape designers who took part in the construction of the park were Calvert Vox and . The park was designed in the English style: with free planting of trees, shrubs, natural fences and winding alleys. Riverside Park has a positive impact on the attractiveness of the area. Residential mansions began to be built around it. Also shortly after the opening of the park, various monuments and memorials were placed in it, including a on 89th Street, Grant's Mausoleum on 122nd Street, a memorial to firefighters on 100th Street and a monument to Joan of Arc on 93rd street. In 1934–1937, the park was expanded to 59 hectares - the Henry Hudson Main Line was laid across the park, and a rotunda and a marina were built on 79th Street. In 1980, the park received the status of attractions in New York. In the second half of the 1990s, the marina and rotunda were restored for approximately $ 9 million. In 2000, a football field, three basketball courts and a 289-meter pier were built on a 2.8 hectare park site between 68th and 72nd streets, known as Riverside Park South . [2] [3] .
