Biological Description

Evergreen, compact, highly branched shrub 1.5–2 m high. In Germany, at the age of 15 years, height is about 150 cm, width is about 180 cm [4] .

The leaves are leathery, oblong-elliptic, up to 12 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, dark green above, paler below, shiny, glabrous.

Inflorescences are spherical, bear 16-20 flowers.

The flowers are light purple-pink with a black-red spot, a diameter of about 80 mm. There is no aroma . The stamens are purple.

The flowering is plentiful in June. Duration about 30 days [5] [1] [4] .

In Culture

'Humboldt' is one of the most popular and widespread varieties of rhododendron in Northern Germany . It is rare in Finland . His stamina is not quite sufficient, although he tolerates winters well under the protection of snow. In Northern Germany, the 'Humboldt' reaches more than two meters in height, but in Finland, due to the severity of snow and low frost resistance, its height barely exceeds one meter. When wintering under snow, it blooms normally [6] . In central Russia, it hibernates under light shelter (leaves and spruce branches) [1] .

It withstands temperature drops to −29 ° С [5] .
