Background and Creation

Starting at age 14, the Lord has worked with Universal to develop her vocals and artistic vision. The contract with the label was signed thanks to its manager Scott McLachlan. After that, the young singer collaborated with a number of songwriters, whose work turned out to be a series of unsuccessful attempts to find her musical style [2] . In an interview for HitQuarters McLachlan said: “In fact, I think she understood that she was going to write her own music, but at the same time she needed someone to help with the production” [2] .

The Lord began to compose songs at the age of 13-14 [3] . Ultimately, the New Zealand songwriter and producer Joel Little was appointed to work with the singer, with whom the Lord successfully worked [2] . The Love Club EP , the singer's debut mini-album, was released in March 2013 and received praise from the music press. Some publications compared the disc with the work of Sky Ferreira , Florence + The Machine , Lana Del Rey and Grimes [4] . The Love Club EP reached the second position on the charts of New Zealand [5] and Australia [6] , and also reached 23 positions in the Billboard 200 [7] .

Before starting work on Pure Heroine , the Lord announced that she intends to make her debut album “holistic” work [8] . As with The Love Club EP , Pure Heroine was recorded with producer Joel Little at his Golden Age studio in the suburbs of Auckland , Morningside [9] . Starting from the first stages of work, Lord and Little played a demo to Scott McLachlan, after which they discussed the result and made changes to the songs [2] . Later, the performer showed the lyrics to her boyfriend James Lowe, communication with which, according to her, inspired her to write most of the album [10] . Lord and Little followed the recording process, which MacLachlan later called “very short”; despite the fact that the album was recorded in a small studio without expensive musical equipment, the work was completed in less than a year [2] . As a result, ten songs hit the record, while the record did not go through about 7-8 tracks [2] . Forming the final list of compositions, Lord and McLachlan decided to leave ten and not add “filler material” [2] .

Music and Lyrics

Critics compared the music of Pure Heroine with the work of performers such as Florence Welch (left) and Lana Del Rey (right) [11] .

Vocal Lord has been praised critically for its wide range [12] and powerful pitch [13] . Due to the fact that the Lord does not play any musical instruments, she felt the need to focus on vocals [14] . The AV Club columnist Kevin MacFarland spoke of the singer’s voice as “the essence of her talent,” continuing: “The Lord has charisma and vocal experience twice her age. The performer’s voice is not booming or domineering, but rather mysterious and charming, floating alone in a sea of reverberations and digital sounds, swimming in many overlapping tracks ” [15] . According to Annie Barrett, editor of Entertainment Weekly , the Lord’s voice is “far beyond her years” [16] , and in Billboard magazine, the singer’s vocals were noted for his “gloom and restraint” [13] .

The contribution of producer Joel Little became the basis for the sound of Pure Heroine , referring to the illusory sound effects of Massive Attack and The xx [13] . The Lord emphasized that during the recording process, she “actually had no particular sound in her thoughts”. The performer was inspired by the works of James Blake and minimalist music [14] . The structure of the compositions was created under the influence of hip-hop , pop , and electronic music, which the Lord listened with the intention to develop a “real taste” for writing longplay [14] . Thus, the minimalist production of the album was noted in separate reviews [17] , and the arrangements , according to some editors, were created under the influence of the works of Robin and Santigold [18] . The press described Pure Heroine as electronic [19] , dream pop - [12] and electro pop [20] .

Pure Heroine songs are dedicated to youth and criticism of popular culture [21] ; they examine the themes of wealth [22] , fame [20] , consumer culture and social status [21] . The album also reveals such classic themes of tin-pop style as sociophobia , romance [23] , “moral oppression of adolescents and anxiety” [24] . According to NME observers, the lyrics indicate that the Lord “missed” [25] . The performer’s lyrics describe in detail “the routine of adolescent life” and note “the often ignored intelligence of the future generation” [26] . In addition, the texts of the Lord contain references to anatomy and, in particular, to white teeth, which, according to critics, is a metaphor for the “Hollywood smile”, which speaks of society’s unrealistic expectations [26] . Some publications considered it a reference to social structure and economic inequality [21] . In an analytical article in iD magazine, reviewer Wendy Sifrit points out that Pure Heroine talks about the dreams of a teenager from the suburbs and his real life, emphasizing: “[ Pure Heroine ] is probably the most open and convincing statement about teenagers' eternal desire to get everything; they are desperately striving to grow up and begin to live, but deep down they realize that having left this stage of life behind, they can never return to it again ” [27] . The performer herself claimed that she dedicated the album to the place where her childhood passed - Devonport , a suburb of Auckland, which she also calls a “bubble”, because “all the people [here] are familiar with each other and Devonport itself seems cut off from other areas cities. It seems to me that by listening to my music you can understand where I come from ” [28] .

Songs

Part One (1-5)

The photograph of baseball player George Brett , taken in 1976 by photographer Ted Spiegel, served as the inspiration for the song “Royals” [29] .

In the opening track Tennis Court , the Lord talks about his newfound popularity [15] [30] and criticizes “social life” [31] . “Tennis Court” is a downtempo -style song inspired by hip-hop and EDM , combining alternative [32] and art pop , as well as electro [33] ; the recordings used synthesizers [34] and electronic tacts in the arrangement [35] . First of all, Lord and Little wrote music and beats, and the text was composed later [36] . Forbes columnist Nick Mistitt compared Tennis Court to The Postal Service The District Sleeps Alone Tonight [37] . “400 Lux” (named after the level of illumination during sunrise and sunset) was interpreted by critics as a song about first love [38] ; in lines of text, the Lord describes life in the suburbs in detail. Jason Lipschutz from Billboard described 400 Lux as the best-selling femme fatale ( French la femme fatale ), musically combining “canyon-sized basses and popping drums.” The critic continued, noting that in one song the Lord fit both deeply expressive words ( “You lean on the steering wheel” ) and the full powers of the statement ( “Maybe we are empty, but courage is with us!” ) [13] .

The song “ Royals ” was composed by the Lord in half an hour [39] and was recorded during the week during the holidays [40] . The idea to write a song about the luxurious life of pop musicians came to the performer when she saw a photo of Ted Spigel, published in the July issue of National Geographic in 1976; it depicted baseball player George Brett from the Kansas City Royals club signing the balls in a T-shirt with the name of his team (Royals). She later said in an interview: “It was just that [Royals] word. It’s cool. ” In addition, the song was influenced by the singer’s attraction to the aristocracy : in the same interview, she mentions “that 500 years ago kings and queens were like rock stars” [41] . The singer was also inspired by the work of hip-hop artists, although she criticized their “shitty” references to “expensive” cars and alcohol [42] .

The Lord mentions his fear of growing up and a party [43] , organized in the absence of parents, as the main sources of inspiration for writing “ Ribs ” [44] - an electro-pop of the composition inspired by deep house music [45] [46] . The next track, “ Buzzcut Season ”, with “weak drums ” and “drip xylophone ” [47] , drew inspiration from tropical music [47] . The lyrics of the song describe the “absurdity of modern life” [48] , as well as the theme of the search for “refuge and tranquility [from modern life]” [49] .

Part Two (6-10)

“Glory and Gore” is a black satire in which, according to the Clash publication, the cult of celebrities is equated with gladiatorial battles [17]

"Team"
The mid-tempo composition “Team” borrows elements of alternative pop and electro-hop.
Playback help

The sixth track from the longplay - “ Team ” - is a hybrid of alternative pop [32] and electro-hop [50] ; when recording, synthesizers [13] , bass instruments [51] , a snare drum [52] and a beat [53] created on the basis of claps [54] were used . The lyrics were written during the Lord’s journey around the world and are dedicated to her “friends and country” [55] . According to Robin Murray of Clash , in the song you can hear “all the surprise that one would expect from a teenager who only recently knew the world” [56] . In addition, according to Lord, in “Team” she presents herself as a “realistic” pop star, referring to the line “We live in cities that you will never see on TV . ” In it, the singer compares the opposite in popularity of her native New Zealand and New York [55] . Time reviewer Lily Rothman suggested that the line “We know how to rule everything” was a kind of reaction to “We control the world, not him” from Miley Cyrus ’s song “ We Can't Stop ” [57] .

“ Glory and Gore ” is an electro- ballad inspired by chillwave and hip-hop [34] [38] . The song was described by critics as “gloomy satire” [50] , forming together with the previous song of the album “Team” a dystopic saga, the second part of which presents themes in the style of the series “ Black Mirror ”, comparing the cult of celebrities with gladiatorial battles [17] , and cynically criticizing the obsession of modern society with violence [13] . So, Evan Savdey from PopMatters described “Glory and Gore” as a “dark” version of Katy Perry's “ Roar ” song [12] . “Still Sane” is a small ballad in which the Lord, according to Kevin MacFarland of the AV Club , struggles with his ambitions and fear of how fame will affect her [15] . A clear, perfected production album was noted on the example of “Still Sane”, in which the “obsessive” vocals of the Lord are reflected from ear to ear [26] . The optimistic mood of “Still Sane” was marked by a successful way to “dilute” the end of the album, and cheerful chords were compared with the early works of Vampire Weekend [58] . The main part of White Teeth Teens is mastering the Lord du-woop music, while in the final part the withering vocals slowly bring an insightful conclusion. The lyrics indicate a striking difference between the appearance and inner world of “white-toothed teenagers” [13] . Scott Interrante, a columnist for PopMatters magazine, paid particular attention to the metaphorical mention of white teeth in the lyrics, suggesting that “old-fashioned and popular teenagers use their white teeth as their distinguishing feature” [21] .

The closing song of Pure Heroine “ A World Alone”, paired with “400 Lux”, according to critics, can be called a “dark disco diamond” [59] . The song begins with “lonely guitar notes”, gradually turning into a “stormy dance beat” [13] [60] . The last line, “ Let yourself talk ... ”, according to some reviewers, was built on the basis of the question and answer structure and refers to the line “ Don't you think that human chatter is boring ?” From Tennis Court [30] .

For Lord it was the first tour with concerts in North America in August [78] and the next two in Europe [79] . The performer returned to North America to perform eight additional shows before touring six shows in Australia. In 2014, the Lord performed another 40 additional shows in North America, and also played 19 concerts in Asia , 6 in Europe and 3 in South America [80] . The set of concerts consisted of songs from Pure Heroine and The Love Club EP [83] . Over the course of several shows, the Lord changed clothes to convey the atmosphere of each track [84] . Most of the songs the singer sang in the dark; often her face was hidden from the crowds of listeners [85] . At one of the concerts, Lord performed the unreleased song “Good Fights” [86] . The tour received positive reviews from critics who separately noted the Lord’s clean vocals and her charisma on stage, as well as the lack of scenery per se [87] .

“ Royals ” was released in digital format as the first single from the album on June 3, 2013 [88] . Pure Heroine was warmly received by critics who praised the album's songs, producing and vocal abilities of the Lord. On the Metacritic aggregator site, longplay has a rating of 79 out of 100 based on 28 reviews, which corresponds to "generally positive reviews" [113] . Billboard critic Jason Lipschuts called the album "honest and fascinating." So, speaking of debuting artists at the time of the release of Pure Heroine , the reviewer said that among them, the Lord has “the most striking voice and lyrics that awaken thoughts.” Lipschutz added: “the era of the Lord has begun” [13] . Tom Cardy, columnist for The Dominion Post also praised the album, stressing that despite the lack of “innovation” and any “surprises,” Pure Heroine is “pure gold” on par with the previous The Love Club EP , and in general represents a strong debut [121] .

According to Lydia Jenkin from The New Zealand Herald , the album has “ingenious lyrics” and “endlessly interesting melodies”. Echoing The Dominion Post , Jenkin emphasized that Pure Heroine does not offer any surprises, but nonetheless, “The Lord became the new pop heroine” [122] . In a mixed review of Spin , Mora Johnston noted that the singer used “age as a kind of awkward trick”; “The music is moderately aggressive,” but the Lord was shrouded in “(probably fake) teen-pop star boredom” [119] . Steven Thomas Erlevine from AllMusic suggested that the Lord “might just be a project,” alluding to her “dishonesty” in the songs; the critic called the album’s music “non-original” and compared it with the work of Lana Del Rey , but praised the Lord’s style and its “potential” [24] .

In turn, Adam Offitzer from Pretty Much Amazing magazine emphasized that although the album “cannot be called a masterpiece”, it is “unique and addictive enough to stay on hearing” [58] . Pitchfork critic Lindsay Zoladz wrote that the Lord “achieves a tricky balance in exposing irony and even hypocrisy without looking instructive or moralistic,” implying that music brings pompous personalities from heaven to earth [118] . Evan Soudey from PopMatters described the album as “a luxurious, captivating experience. The sudden international success of the Lord in a crowded music market came in very handy ” [12] . Robert Christgau , praising Pure Heroine quite ironically, said: “Her ambitions are justified, but the reason why she writes songs is not alone, because a sixteen-year-old girl simply can’t write hits without stopping” [120] .

Impact

“A young girl appears out of nowhere, successfully coping with all these Luke , Miley and Riri, while maintaining restraint and honesty. This is a story that we have not seen since ... Adele, when far in 2011 she released her album, highlighting [her] a special image of virtuosity and youth (the ubiquitous 21 ). ”

In the Forbes publication on the challenge to Pure Heroine pop music [37] .

The singer was praised for her view of pop music and for the challenge posed to modern music and her representatives, including Miley Cyrus and Rihanna [17] . So, according to Clash : “<...> the enormous popularity of Pure Heroine suggests that not everything is lost. She [popularity] says that in pop music there is still a niche for intellectual, sophisticated and significant music, which does not depend on public statements, spread legs, twitter, twerk and obscene desperate electrohooks . We will certainly find out if the rising pressure of becoming a star will prevail over the Lord. But at this moment, she is definitely our “first lady” ( Queen Queen bee ) ” [17] . British musician David Bowie called the Lord "the future of music" [178] .

Forbes included the Lord on the list of “30 under 30,” consisting of young people “changing our world” [179] . She became the youngest person in the Music category: “The largest New Zealand star has quickly gained universal recognition thanks to her debut album Pure Heroine and the song“ Royals “, which suddenly became a hit. She has already received $ 2.5 million from a deal with the American label and more is just on the way ” [179] . However, the Lord also took the top position in the list of the most influential teenagers according to Time ; according to the editorial staff of the magazine, she “forged her own path” [179] . Forbes editors spoke of Pure Heroine as "explosive success," adding: "A great revolution is just around the corner." [37] Addressing readers, Billboard called the Lord “your new alt-rock heroine” when the performer appeared on the cover of the September 2013 issue, where the portrait of the singer was accompanied by the subtitle “ The New Queen Of Alternative” ) [39] .

Several publications have noted Pure Heroine for introducing a new sound into mainstream music [180] [181] . According to Lindsay Zoladz of The Ringer , the influence of the song “Royals” is “difficult to evaluate because it completely rewrote the rules by which young performers write radio-pop songs.” Continuing that the long-lasting effect of the album is already evident in the works of other young performers, including Alessia Kara , Daya and Halsey [182] , Carey Batten of The New Yorker , echoing Zoladz, said: “It's hard to say whether the Lord’s music contributed to important changes or just anticipated them, but the pop scene - in particular for women - has undergone major changes since the release of Pure Heroine . In it [the pop scene], the sugary, frankly sexual realities of the beginning of the zero are almost unrecognizable. ” Battan also suggested that other pop artists, including Cyrus, Lady Gaga , Katy Perry and Taylor Swift , changed their image or sound to adapt to changes in mainstream music after the release of Pure Heroine [183] .
