Patrick MacDonald is an American athlete of Irish descent. At the 1912 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the shot put with the Olympic record - 15.34 meters and the silver medal in shot put with two hands. At the Olympics in 1920, became the Olympic champion in throwing weight at 56 pounds. He was the standard bearer of the US team at the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games of 1920 and 1924.

Over the years of his sports career, he won the US championship in throwing weight at 56 pounds 10 times and won the national shot put championship 6 times. In 2012, he was included in the US Athletics Hall of Fame.
Born in a poor family of farmers. In 1899 he emigrated to the United States. From 1905 to 1946 he worked as a police officer in New York. In 1926 he was promoted to lieutenant, and after 19 years he was promoted to captain.
He was buried in the cemetery Gate of Heaven . In his native village Dunbeg there is a memorial in memory of the athlete.
