Biography
On August 23, 1975, Philip Edward Wilson was ordained a priest , after which he served in the Diocese of Maitland .
On April 12, 1996, Pope John Paul II appointed Philip Edward Wilson as Bishop of Wollongong. On July 10, 1996, Philip Edward Wilson was ordained a bishop by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Edward Bid Clancy, in co-service with the Bishop of Wollongong, William Edward Murr, and the Bishop of Maytland-Newcastle Leo Morris Clarke.
November 30, 2000 was appointed auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Adelaide. On December 3, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed Philip Edward Wilson Archbishop of Adelaide [1] .
Arrest and sentence
On May 22, 2018, a 67-year-old Wilson was convicted by the Newcastle court of hiding his former colleague (at the time of the trial no longer alive) of sexual crimes against at least four boys known to him in the 1970s. On July 3, the court sentenced Wilson to 12 months in prison. Thus, Wilson became the highest Catholic official in the world ever convicted of concealing sexual offenses [2] [3] [4] . However, Archbishop Wilson immediately appealed his sentence, and on December 6, 2018, his appeal was satisfied and all charges were dropped from him [5] .
After sentencing resigned, which was adopted by the Pope on July 30, 2018 [6] .
