Description

The total length reaches 40 cm. The skin color is brown or olive-gray, yellow. The males have a bright red head. On the back there are wide brown stripes, which are interrupted by yellow stripes on the sides. From the eyes are black stripes. Belly with gray longitudinal stripes. The tail and limbs are black. Above the tympanic cavity are two small groups of spines. There is a reddish tinge on the throat and neck, therefore, it is called “bloodsucker”. It has strong jaws.

Lifestyle

It prefers tropical forests, rocky, rocky terrain. It occurs mainly in the trees. On a hot sunny day, a lizard sits on a branch or on a wall and basks in the sun with its mouth wide open. When threatened, it hurts to bite. It feeds on insects and small vertebrates.

Reproduction

This is an egg-laying lizard. Sexual maturity comes in 1 year. The female lays 10–20 long, fusiform and leathery eggs into moist soil. Young lizards hatch in 6-7 weeks.

Spread

Dwells in Afghanistan , Pakistan , Nepal , Bhutan , India, Sri Lanka, Thailand , Malaysia, Myanmar, southern China, Vietnam , on. Sumatra (Indonesia) and Reunion .
