Biography

Eduard Yulievich Ioganson was born on December 18, 1894 in St. Petersburg, in the first line of Vasilyevsky Island [1] , into a family of Estonian Germans.

By the beginning of World War I, Johanson managed to get a very decent education, at that time: he graduated from the 6-year commercial school at the Lutheran Church of St. Catherine. Following are Berlitz language courses, where he masters French and English. And, already on his own initiative, has been painting for two years in a society for the promotion of art. From 1910 until his mobilization in 1915, he worked as a small employee in a private German bank.

His front-line life will not make any serious changes to his occupation, since he will be connected with the same bookkeeping business with β€œsupply”. Having finished the war with the rank of corporal, during the Civil War , Johanson joined the Red Army , where, as before, he continued to be engaged in supply. Only now deliveries are going through the Cheka line. It is this circumstance that will lead Eduard Johanson to acquaintance with the Chekist Friedrich Ermler . In all likelihood, it was Ermler who would abruptly change his fate by persuading him to enter the College of Screen Arts. Where, however, Johanson will study for only a few months. After which he will transfer to the Cinema Experimental Workshop organized by Friedrich Ermler - abbreviated CEM.
