Biography
Sergei Kuznetsov was born on October 21, 1917 in the village of Bolshoi Khutor (now the Nizhnelomovsky district of the Penza region ). He graduated from seven classes of the school and the first course of the fruit-field technical college. In 1935, Kuznetsov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1938, he graduated from the Chkalov Military Aviation School of Pilots. Since October 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. He was wounded twice in battles [1] .
By August 1944, Major Sergei Kuznetsov was the navigator of the 233rd Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 234th Fighter Air Division of the 16th Air Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . By that time, he had completed 227 sorties, took part in 52 air battles, shooting down 19 enemy aircraft in person and 8 more as part of the group [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1944 for "courage and heroism shown in air battles," Major Sergei Kuznetsov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal [1] .
After the war, Kuznetsov continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1954, with the rank of colonel, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Orel . He died on October 23, 1973, was buried in the Naugorsk cemetery of Orel [1] .
He was also awarded two orders of the Red Banner , orders of Alexander Nevsky and World War 1 degree, two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
Perpetuation of memory
- In the city of Nizhny Lomov, Penza Region, on the Walk of Fame, a memorial plaque was erected for the hero.
