Biography

The son of daimyo Ukita Naoye ( 1529 - 1582 ), the ruler of the province of Bichu . His father went over to the side of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi . In 1582, after the death of his father Ukita, Hidee became the head of the Ukita clan. Hideie was raised by Toyotomi Hideyoshi , whom he then faithfully served. When Hideie was still young, his uncle Ukita Tadeie acted as leader of the Ukita clan in the Toyotomi Hideyoshi army during the siege of Takamatsu Castle in 1582 . In June 1582, Oda Nobunaga was killed, but the siege of the castle continued until he capitulated two days later. After the surrender of the Toyotomi castle, Hideyoshi hurried to Kyoto , leaving Hideie to be the ruler of the provinces of Bizen , Mimasaka and Bichu . Ukita Hideie was instructed to observe the actions of the daimyo Mori Terumoto in the west.

In 1586, Ukita Hideye married Go, the daughter of Maeda Toshiye, who was adopted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi .

Ukita Hideye participated in the military campaigns of Toyotomi Hideyoshi against Shikoku ( 1585 ), Kyushu ( 1586 ) and the siege of Odawara ( 1590 ). During the first invasion of Korea, Ukita Hideye was appointed Toyotomi Hideyoshi as commander of the expeditionary force. In 1598, after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he joined the Board of Trustees (“Gotairo”), which was created to govern the state until the age of Toyotomi Hideyori , the youngest son and successor of Hideyoshi.

In 1600, Ukita Hideye joined the side of Ishida Mitsunari in his confrontation with Tokugawa Ieyasu . He took part in the attack on Fushimi Castle and was among those who were defeated at the Battle of Sekigahara . During the battle he commanded a large detachment of 17 thousand soldiers. After the defeat of Ukita, Hideie fled to the principality of Satsumu . He was captured and, together with his two sons, exiled to the remote island of Hatijoujima . His castle Okayama and the possessions of the Ukita clan received the defector Kobayakawa Hideaki , who played a decisive role in the victory at Sekigahara .

Ukita Hideye's wife obtained permission to give gifts to her exiled husband and sons ( rice , sake and clothes). After the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the new shogun offered Hideye a pardon, but he did not accept it and remained on the island. Died in exile in old age.

The descendants of the sons of Ukita Hideye returned to Japan and received complete forgiveness at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate .
