Katevbinsky rhododendron hybrid ( lat.Rhododéndron catawbiense ), obtained by Anthony Vaterrer in England in 1851. Outwardly, it closely resembles the 'English Roseum' variety, also obtained by Watererer. `Roseum Elegans` is the most common variety of rhododendron in the cold northeastern regions of the United States , just like the` Catawbiense Grandiflorum` in Finland . Several clones of this variety are presented on the market, many of them are less hardy than the original variety [2] .

Not to be confused with deciduous variety: R. 'Roseum Elegans', J. Ivery (until 1846) [3] .

Biological Description

Evergreen, vigorous shrub 1.8–3 m high. Annual growth of about 15 cm. The crown is wide-round, closed below, with a diameter of up to 4 m.

The leaves are leathery, oval or narrowly elliptic, glossy, 7-8 cm long, 5-6 cm wide (according to other sources 110 × 35 mm), dark green, often red-brown when blooming.

Blooming in June.

The inflorescences are compact, almost round, 120 × 90 mm, bear 12-20 flowers.

The flowers are pink with a reddish-brown spot, wide-funnel-shaped, 45 × 60 mm. The edge of the petals is slightly wavy. There is no aroma . The stamens are pink-violet [4] [1] [3] .

In Culture

He lives in culture for a long time. The soil is fertile, slightly acidic. It tolerates slight shading.

In central Russia, it is completely winter-hardy if planted in places protected from the wind [1] . Withstands temperature drops to −32 ° C [4] . In southern Finland, under the protection of snow, it winters well [2] .
