Play career

At 17, in 1973 , Paul McNamee became the winner of the Australian Open. [2] In the same year he made his debut in the Wimbledon tournament , and the next year - in the adult Australian Open. Since the autumn of 1976, his performances in professional tennis tournaments became regular, and in November 1977, he made his way to the finals of such a tournament in Santiago, Chile, for the first time, where his partner was American Henry Bunis . The Australian-American couple broke resistance in the semi-final against Guillermo Vilas and Ion Cyriac , and in the final lost to local favorites - the Jaime Filol - Patricio Cornejo pair.

In July 1978, for the first time, another Australian Peter McNamara played with McNami. Initially, the success of the new couple was rather modest, but in the spring of 1979 in Nice they won their first joint tournament, which marked the beginning of one of the most productive cooperation in the history of professional tennis. McNamee and McNamara, who received the nickname Supermaki ( English Supermacs ) [3] in 1979 alone, won five tournaments, including the Australian Open. The owners of the court, sown as number five, were lucky not to meet another seeded couple for the tournament [4] , but in the summer of 1980 Supermaks seriously claimed the title of the strongest couple in the world, consistently outplaying practically all the famous rivals at the quarterfinals: Raul Ramirez and Brian Gottfried , in the semifinals, the first pair of the tournament, John McInroy and Peter Fleming, and in the final, fourth-seeded Bob Lutz and Stan Smith [5] . In just one year, McNami again won five tournaments in doubles (including three with McNamara), adding to them his first title in singles, won in March in Palm Harbor (Florida) after defeating Stan Smith. In September in Palermo, he reached the second singles final in his career (losing to Guillermo Vilasu) and after that was first invited to the Australian team for the inter-zonal Davis Cup match against the Italians . Debut in the national team, however, turned out to be unsuccessful: McNami, who had just won the Italian team leader Adriano Panattu in Palermo, lost to him in a cup match and had a personal match, and in fact predetermined the defeat of the Australians. The ending of the season, however, was more successful for him: in the last six tournaments of the year he played in the finals five times in a row, where his partner was McNamara and Swiss Heinz Gunthardt three times. McNami won two out of five finals, having failed, however, to repeat last year’s success at the Australian Open, after which he continued his series of successes in the new year, defeating McNamara at the WCT Final tournament held among the best pairs of the past season.

Having missed several months after winning the WCT Final Tournament, McName reached Australia in April 1981 with the team of the Nations in the Düsseldorf Cup finals, and then with McNee the finals of the Open Grand Prix of Germany , the semi-finals of the French Open . In the ATP ranking published on May 25 among players in doubles, he dismissed John McEnroe from the first line and stayed on it for three weeks before giving up the American championship again [6] . Until the end of the year he won two more tournaments.

In 1982, in Baltimore, McNamee won his second tournament in singles, beating Guillermo Vilas in the final, and then at the Australian Open achieved the best career result in singles in Grand Slam tournaments , passing to the semifinals. Like two years before in pairs, he was lucky with the draw - before the semi-finals he did not meet a single seeded opponent, losing in the end to the sown first future champion - Johan Crick from South Africa [7] . As a result, McNami finished the year in 33rd place in the singles rankings [8] . In pairs, he won three tournaments in a year, including the second in three years of the Wimbledon tournament, where he and McNamara defeated both pairs sown under the first numbers [9] , and finished the season in eighth place [8] .

The year 1983 began with the strongest injury of McNami's permanent partner, Peter McNamara: a break in the knee tendons put him out of action for 21 months, almost until the end of 1984 [10] . As a result, McNami performed all year with various partners, managing to win four tournaments in doubles, including another compatriot Mark Edmondson - second in his career Australian Open, and finished the season in third place in the ranking of players in doubles [8] . After winning the Australian Open, he added the Davis Cup to his trophy collection: in four matches for the Australian team this year, he brought the team six points (two in single and four doubles) without losing a single match. In 1984, he played for the last time in the Grand Slam tournament final (making his way to the Wimbledon final for the third time) and won the last three doubles titles in less prestigious tournaments, where he played in a pair with young Pat Cash . However, his career did not end there: in 1985 and 1986, despite serious kidney surgery, which was postponed in 1985, he played four times in the finals in doubles and twice in singles, where by May 1986 he had risen to 24th place in the ranking - the highest in a single career. This year, he also won the second Davis Cup with the Australian team. The last time he went to the court in a professional tournament at the beginning of 1988 , reaching the third round at the Australian Championship, where he lost to the seed planted under number seven Cash. In total, at the time of the completion of his career, McName had two titles in singles and 23 in doubles (of which 14 were conquered in a little over four years with McNamara).

Further career

Already in 1984, long before the end of his playing career, McName was elected to the board of directors of the Association of Tennis Professionals (APR) . Later he made a career as a successful sports administrator. From 1999 to 2006, he was chairman of the Australian Open (leaving this post after a conflict with the leadership of the Australian Tennis Federation [11] ), after which he led a similar golf tournament for two years. He was also the general manager of the Melbourne Demons football club, but was sacked only four months later as a result of a change in leadership [12] . In 2009, he lost the election to the position of chairman of the Australian Tennis Federation, losing only one vote to his opponent [3] .

McName, along with Australian tennis players Charlie Fancutt and Pat Cash , stood at the origins of the prestigious exhibition tennis tournament - the Hopman Cup , which also involved the famous widow of the famous tennis player and coach Harry Hopman , after whom the tournament got its name [13] . McNami remained director of the Hopman Cup for 24 years, including about a decade after the rights to the tournament were transferred to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) . He was removed from the post of director after the ITF decided to transfer the rights to the Australian Tennis Federation tournament [11] .

McName also works as a trainer. In 1993, he coached the Olympic champion Jennifer Capriati , and in the second decade of the 21st century, he actively supported the cooperation program between the Australian and Taiwanese tennis federations, taking patronage over one of the strongest tennis players of the island of that time, Xie Shuwei . McNami helped one of Australia’s strongest greenhouse tennis players of the time, Paul Henley , to persuade several of the island’s top tennis players to compete with Henley in mixed-pair competitions as part of the Grand Slam: Zhan Yunzhan Henley reached the Australian Open finals, and Xie Shuwei was able to play in the semifinals of the Wimbledon tournament . Later, Xie, who McNews convinced to pay more attention to the game in singles, won two WTA tournaments , rising in the ranking from 333rd to 27th place [3] . Also during this period, the Chinese woman became the first representative of the island to win the Grand Slam tournament in women's doubles and won the WTA Finals . In recent years, McName has often criticized the Australian Tennis Federation, which accuses of excessive control over players, primarily in the matter of choosing coaches who change too often. The concept of McNami suggests that Australian athletes can achieve better results only by working with permanent coaches for a long time, even if they have to be chosen privately [14] .
