Biography
As the leader of the rebel Republican Party, he was the organizer and chief ideologue of the coup d'état of 1920 against the long-lasting hegemony of the party of President José Gutierrez . True, immediately after the coup, the Republican Party split.
Seeing the impossibility of winning the elections of 1925, Saavedra took a more expedient course - he decided to choose a successor who would fully adhere to his political attitudes. At first he chose Gabino Villanueva for this role, but he was not flexible enough to fulfill all the wishes of Saavedra. The latter had to cancel the election. This caused national protests, forced Saavedra to resign, leaving Felipe Segundo Guzmán , the chairman of the Senate, in his place. The latter appointed elections for 1926.
Thus, Saavedra was able to find the right candidate for the presidency. This candidate was Hernando Siles Reyes , who participated in the elections along with his brother Saavedra, Abdon Saavedra. However, Hernando Siles did not long remain an obedient executor of Saavedra’s will, and when he was tired of the instructions of the former president, he sent him along with his brother into exile.
Saavedra remained an influential political leader even after he failed to return to power. He died in Chile during exile on May 1, 1939.
A province in the department of La Paz is named in his honor.
