In accordance with the Constitution of 1828, the election of the President of the Republic was carried out by electors. 216 electors were selected, three from each congressman . Each elector could vote for two candidates, and in advance it was not known who would be the president, and who - the vice-president. The electors were pressured, and as a result they voted for Francisco Antonio Pinto and Joaquín Vicuña .
However, despite the fact that Pinto agreed to become president, his subsequent resignation and replacement with Ramona Vicuña led to the Civil War of 1829.
