History

The first Muslims in Australia were traders from the Indonesian archipelago who traded with the indigenous people of the northern coast of Australia hundreds of years before the arrival of the Europeans [4] . The Makassar , who traded fish, sea cucumbers, and so on with Australians, left their mark on the language, art, and economy of the peoples of northern Australia [5] .

In the second half of the XIX century. camel drivers, who were called " Afghans ", came from Central Asia to Australia. Camels were first brought to Australia in 1840, and the first camel drivers arrived in Melbourne in June 1860. Despite the fact that the drivers were not only from Afghanistan, they became known as "Afghans" [6] .

Drivers settled in areas near Alice Springs and other areas of North Australia, marrying indigenous people. The first mosque in Australia was built in 1861 on the Marie (South Australia) [7] . The Great Adelaide Mosque was built in 1888 by descendants of Afghan cameleers.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Muslims of non-European origin were forbidden to move to Australia because of the white Australia policy in the Australian Constitution. However, some Muslims still managed to come to Australia. In the 1920s and 1930s, Albanian Muslims were allowed to come to Australia due to their European origin [8] . Albanian Muslims built the first mosque in 1960 in Shepharton, and in 1963 they built the first mosque in Melbourne.

After World War II, the issue of labor shortages became acute in the country's economy, which led to a weakening of Australia’s immigration policy. Thanks to this, the number of Muslims in Australia increased, mainly from Bosnia and Herzegovina. From 1967 to 1971, about 10 thousand Turks settled in Australia as part of an agreement between Australia and Turkey.
