The construction of the branch was started in 1849 by the Knox and Lincoln Railroad company. The construction of the canvas on the rocky promontories of the Atlantic coast turned out to be more expensive than planned, and the branch was put into operation only in 1871, and the section between the cities of Bath and Woolidge across the Kenebek River crossed the ferries.
In 1891, Knox and Lincoln Railroad leased a branch to the Maine Central Railroad railway company, which in 1912 opened summer passenger services on a branch.
In 1927, the Carlton bridge was built across the Kenebek river.
With the development of the automotive industry, summer passenger transportation of tourists along the branch turned out to be unclaimed, and in 1959 were discontinued.
In 1987, the State of Maine bought the branch to prevent it from closing.
From 1990 to 2000, the branch operator was the Maine Coast Railroad company, which called the Manx Coast branch (Maine Coast).
In 2003, the branch management contract was won by the Morristown & Erie Railway company , which created the Manx Eastern Railway subsidiary, the branch operator, which currently provides transportation by branch.
