Biography

Born in the Crimea , in the city of Kafa ( Feodosia ), where he lived his whole life. He was the son of a nobleman Astvatsatur, famous among the Theodosian Armenians [2] . He was trained at the school at the monastery of St. Anthony near Kafa, where he also became a monk at an early age. In 1441 he wrote a calendar work consisting of rather complicated cosmographic tables, giving relevant comments and explanations. Communication with the Genoese merchants of Feodosia helped Esai expand the horizons of Armenian calendar studies [3] . He was fluent in Arabic [4] , was well acquainted with Arabic cosmography [5] . In 1444 he wrote the essay "Calendar of the Sun and the Moon" ( Armenian "Տումար արեգական և լուսնի" ), which came to us in three copies of the mid-15th century. In this work, along with Armenian terms (names of planets , zodiac signs , stars , etc.) Yesai gives Arabic, Persian, Latin and Greek equivalents. At the end of the text is a drawing of astrolabe , with the help of which, in all probability, he made his observations [6] . In addition to cosmography, he was interested in theology, philosophy and musical instruments. It is mentioned in some manuscripts from Kafa in the 1430-1440s, after which biographical data are missing.
