The language of guarihio has 2 variants (dialects), known as mountain guarihio ( guarijío de la sierra ) and lowland guarihio ( guarijío del río ). The mountain variant is spoken in the east of the municipality of Uruachi and near Arechuyvo, the state of Chihuahua . The lowland variant is spoken in the southwest: the majority inhabit the Mayo River basin north of the city of San Bernando in the municipality of Alamos in Sonoran State.
Carriers of the mountain guarihio call themselves wario ( warihó ), and lowland - makurave or makuay ( macurawe or makulái ). The contacts between the two groups are scarce, and although the differences between them are small, the media say that mutual understanding is difficult.
