History
Created by architects John S. Archibald and John Scofield [2] , the building has 17 floors and a height of 111 m. The hotel was opened on May 25, 1939 . It was originally called British Columbia [1] . In 1988, the hotel was bought by the Canadian Pacific Hotels chain , which was renamed Fairmont Hotels and Resorts , after which the hotel was named Fairmont Hotel Vancouver .
Previously, the name "Vancouver" was carried by two other hotels located in neighboring neighborhoods. One existed from 1887 to 1916, the other from 1916 to 1939 [1] .
Due to the Great Depression, the construction of the hotel was frozen for 5 years. After the resumption of construction, the construction took place in an emergency mode in order to coincide with its end to the visit to the city of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth [1] .
Full hotel restorations were carried out in 1989 and 1999 [1] .
