Biography
Born March 3, 1886 in the city of Vigevano ( Italy ). Already at an early school age, he showed interest in biology and in 1904 his first work with observations of beetles was published: Le forme italiane del gen. Attelabus (in Riv. Di coleotterologia italiana, II [1904], pp. 165–171, in collab. Con M. Gortani) [1] .
In 1910, he graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in natural sciences. In the same year he went to Naples, where he became an assistant to Professor Filippo Silvestri at the Portici Institute of Entomology. He began to study hymenopteran from the family Agaonidae . In 1919 he was appointed assistant professor at the Laboratory of Zoology. In 1921, Grandi became a professor of general entomology. In 1923 he returned to Bologna to the Department of Entomology at a local university (as well as to the Institute of Zoology, Prof. Alessandro Ghigi), in 1925 he headed the department. In 1928, Grandi founded the Institute of Entomology at the University of Bologna (l'Istituto di Entomologia dell'Università di Bologna) and at about the same time he edited the Proceedings of the Institute of Entomology of the University of Bologna (originally as Bollettino del Laboratorio di entomologia del R. Istituto sup. agrario di Bologna; in 1935-1983 - Bollettino dell'Istituto di entomologia dell'Università di Bologna), which since 1984 bears his name (Bollettino dell'Istituto di entomologia G. Grandi dell'Università di Bologna). Grandi was director of the institute until 1958, when he retired. However, he continued to visit the institute founded by him and to work in it until the end of his days (1970) [1] .
Among his teachers, Grandi named scholars such as Carlo Emery , Giovanni Battista Grassi, and Filippo Silvestri . Among his students, it should be noted: Athos Goidanich, Filippo Venturi, Antonio Servadei, Minos Martelli, Maria Matilde Principi, Giorgio Fiori, Egidio Mellini, Pierino Giunchi, Rodolfo Zocchi, Sergio Zangheri, Giorgio Celli, Leo Pardi, Baccio Grandiacanti .
He died on December 10, 1970 in the city of Bologna [1] .
Recognition
Grandi was one of the founders and life president of the National Academy of Entomology of Italy, dean of his faculty (more than ten years); Director of the Phytopathological Laboratory (about forty years), founder and editor of the series of volumes “Fauna of Italy” [1] .
Grandi was one of the most influential entomologists of his time and the largest Italian entomologist. Honorary member of the Entomological Societies of Belgium, France, Germany, England, Switzerland and other international scientific societies and academies. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Turin, was awarded the Gold Medal (Medaglia d'Oro della Scuola) and the Bolognese Prize for teachers of the University of Bologna (Premio dello Studio Bolognese per i Professori dell'Università di Bologna) [1] .
Since 1984, the Institute of Entomology of the University of Bologna bears his name (Bollettino dell'Istituto di entomologia G. Grandi dell'Università di Bologna).
