Biography
Count Karl August Ehrensverd was born May 5, 1745 in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm, in the family of Field Marshal Augustine Ehrensverd , Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Army in Pomerania during the Seven Years War . He helped his father when the latter was engaged in strengthening the Sveaborg fortress [1] .
In 1789, at the beginning of the war with Russia, he commanded the Swedish Navy . His intention not to retreat after the First Rochensalm battle was not approved by the Swedish king Gustav III , who then himself took command of the Swedish naval forces [2] .
After the death of Gustav III, Carl August Ehrensverd was arrested as a person suspected of involvement in the murder of the monarch, but was released and placed at the head of the entire Swedish naval department [2] with the rank of admiral , but soon left his military career to devote himself entirely art.
Having committed in 1780-1782. a trip to the south of Europe , he composed a description of his journey and published, richly illustrating it with his own engravings: “ Resa till Italien ” (Stockholm, 1786; 2nd edition, 1819) [2] .
In the work "Philosophy of Fine Arts" ( De fria Konsters philosophies , 1786), the author feels great love for ancient art . Per Daniel Amadeus Atterboom in “ Phosphoros ” (1813) and then in “ Svenska Siare och Skalder ” gave an excellent characteristic to Ehrensverd. The writings written by him were repeatedly reprinted [2] .
Two of his albums with cartoons on the history of Sweden, the poet Yu. G. Oksensherna called brilliant works [2] .
Carl August Ehrensverd died on May 21, 1800 during a trip to Orebro .
