Guatape ( isp. Guatapé ) - a city and municipality in the north of Colombia , in the territory of the department of Antioquia . Part of the Eastern Antioquia subregion .

History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on June 1, 1811 . The municipality of Guatape was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1867 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the southeastern part of the department, in the mountainous terrain of the Central Cordillera , on the shore of the reservoir , approximately 40 kilometers east of Medellín , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 2000 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of Guatape is bordered in the north by the municipality of Alejandria , in the west by the municipality of El Penol , in the southeast by the municipality of Granada , in the east by the municipalities of San Rafael and San Carlos . The area of the municipality is 69 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 5,458 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by year:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 48.4% of the population of the Guatape, women - respectively 51.6%. Racially whites and mestizos accounted for 99.96% of the city’s population; Blacks , mulattoes, and Risalese - 0.04% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 94.4%.
Economy
The economy of Guatape is based on tourism , agricultural production and hydropower .
47.4% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are enterprises of the trade sector, 39.7% - enterprises of the service sector, 12.9% - industrial enterprises [4] .
Attractions
To the south-west of the city is the El Penon de Guatape rock, which was once the object of worship of the Tahamis Indians.
