Before the start of the season, Mike Phelan from Norwich City and Neil Webb from Nottingham Forest switched to the club, replacing Gordon Strachan and Norman Whiteside in the midfield line. The team also left an experienced defender Paul McGrath , who switched to Aston Villa. At the end of August, the middlesbrough defender Gary Pallister went to the club. United paid for £ 2.3m to beat its own transfer record. On September 13, for £ 1.7 million, the club signed for 21-year-old West Ham United midfielder Paul Ince .

This season, the team finished in 13th place, which was the worst result since the departure from the First Division in the 1974/75 season. In the course of the season in which United played poorly in the championship, rumors about the dismissal of Alex Ferguson were actively discussed, but the Scot remained at the club. At the end of the season, the club won the FA Cup , beating Crystal Palace in a replay of the final. It was Ferguson's first trophy as the head coach of the club.

The Welshman Mark Hughes became the team's top scorer for the second season in a row.
