At the Olympic Games in Melbourne (1956), he was fifth at a distance of 20 km, setting a national record of 1:32:34. At the European Championships in Stockholm (1958), ahead of Olympic champion Melbourne Leonid Spirin , he won the “gold” with a result of 1:33:09. At the Olympic Games in Rome (1960) he became a bronze medalist (1:34:56). He was a five-time champion of Great Britain. In 1957 and 1958 he won calls at 2 and 7 miles, in 1960 he broke the record at a distance of 2 miles, set in 1904 by George Larner .

At the end of his sports career, he worked on the London Stock Exchange.
