Dzveli-Kveshi

Dzveli-Kveshi ( Georgian. ძველი ქვეში , Azeri. Zol-Göyəç ) is a village of the Bolnisi municipality , Kvemo-Kartli region of the Republic of Georgia with a 98% Azerbaijani population . [5] It is located in the south-eastern part of Georgia, in the territory of the historic Borchaly region .

Changes to Place

In 1990–1991 , as a result of the change by the Georgian leadership of the historical toponyms of ethnic minority settlements in the region, the name of the village of Zol-Goyadzh (“ Azeri. Zol-Göyəç ”) was changed to its current name, Dzveli-Kveshi. [6]

The village is located on the left bank of the Geti River, 13 km from the regional center of Bolnisi , at an altitude of 720 meters from sea level. [7]

It borders on the villages of Dzedznnariani , Kveshi , Javshaniani , Kianeti , Itsria , Akaurta , Senebi , Tanjia , Potskhveriani , Geta , Cresci , Zipori , Hahalajvari , Zvareti , Mushevani , Ratevani and Saberti of the Bolnisi Municipality . [eight]

According to the State Statistics Committee of Georgia, according to the official census of 2002 , the population of the village of Dzveli-Kveshi is 2,183 people and 98% consists of Azerbaijanis . [9]

Interesting Facts

In March-May 2010 , the Muslim community of Georgia, together with the Georgian expert Gela Guniava, carried out expeditionary work, during which they interviewed Muslim-Azerbaijanis in Tbilisi and other cities and towns of Kvemo-Kartli ( Marneuli , Gardabani , Imiri villages , Ponichala , Dzveli-Kveshi, Amamlo, Meore-Kesalo , etc.). The studies included general reference questions about the size, ethnic composition and areas of residence of Muslims in Georgia, as well as the number of mosques, clergymen and the system of religious education.

The activities of Islamic cultural and educational organizations were also investigated, the level of knowledge of the population about Islam and religious ceremonies was studied, the level of penetration of religious norms into the minds and everyday life of Georgian Muslims was determined, meetings with representatives of Shiite and Sunni Muslim clergy, including Akhundas and Imams of the mosques of the above settlements.
