Maltese national television channel PBS made the broadcaster of this event. Sixteen countries took part in the competition. On November 9, the opening ceremony and the draw for the performance of the countries at the official summer residence of the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca [9] [10], took place . The winner of the competition was the representative of Italy Vincenzo Cantiello with the song "Tu primo grande amore" [11] .

December 17, 2013 Director General of the Maltese broadcaster PBS Anton Attard signed the documents on the competition in Malta , and the very next day it was announced on the official website of the competition that Malta would be the organizing country [12] .

On June 16, 2014, the competition’s official website announced that the competition would be held at the Malta Shipbuilding shipyard (following the example of Copenhagen in 2014 ) [13] . Malta Shipbuilding is located in the city of Mars , a ten minute drive from the capital of Malta, Valletta . The peculiarity of the arena is that it consists of three hangars, in which the competition will be held. The opening ceremony of the competition was held at the summer residence of the President of Malta, Verdal Palace , which is located in the city of Dingli [14] .

The largest five-star hotel and spa resort Excelsior Grand Hotel in Malta, which is located on the Mediterranean coast overlooking Marsamksett harbor, was chosen as the residence of the delegation of participants and the island of Manoel [10] .

Changes to the rules

The main difference between the 2014 rules from previous years is that they removed the requirement of mandatory open national selections, and in this regard, many countries switched to domestic selections. This year, the organizers removed the "blind" draw: the order of performance is determined by the producers of the competition. First of all, this was done in order to exclude situations when songs of a similar genre are played in a row [15] .

For the first time, the rehearsal of the participants will be held not in the order of the performances, but according to a pre-arranged schedule. This was done in order to combine rehearsals with excursions and “friendship lessons”. In addition to this, the competition returns to the Top-10 voting system, which was used until 2013 [16] .

To save time, heralds will announce only three maximum scores (8, 10 and 12 points), points from 1 to 7 will be displayed on an electronic scoreboard (a similar system works in an adult competition). For the first time, individual results of voting by viewers and the jury will be published [17] .

Contest Leader

On September 10, 2014, the European Broadcasting Union and the PBS organizer channel announced the name of the 2014 contest in the official website of the contest. She became Moira Delia [4] .

Moira became the only leading show. 42-year-old TV presenter is a veteran of Maltese television. She is known to fans of Eurovision contests as co-host of the Maltese national selections for the adult Eurovision 2005 and 2014 and the herald of Malta at the Eurovision 2006 and 2008 . In her own country, she is mainly known for working in programs on the life of wild animals.

Contest visual design

Logo and tagline

On May 9, 2014, the logo and slogan were presented at the EBU and PBS press conference in Copenhagen. The motto of the contest was the hashtag #Together , which means Together . It was also chosen following the example of a competition in Copenhagen, where the hashtag #JoinUs was the motto. The logo is part of the Maltese eight-pointed cross, which is assembled from multi-colored segments. According to the creators, this makes the logo dynamic and interesting [18] .

Postcards of participants

This year's postcards are dedicated to extreme sports with traditional elements of the participating countries, which are partially shot in the SmartCity Malta technology park. [nineteen]

Competition Scene

On October 1, 2014, the competition scene was presented. The stage will have LED walls with a height of 9 m and the width of the stage will be 28 m and will have two podiums. [20]

National selections

Open national selections (using televoting) are mandatory for all participating countries, but some EMU countries are allowed to conduct domestic selections only to ensure that such countries participate in the current competition. For example, in 2010 and 2011, an exception was made for Latvia. However, since 2014, the requirement of mandatory open national selections has been removed, and in this regard, many countries have switched to domestic selections.

The following countries conduct their open selections:
