Herz Moiseevich Mepen ( April 15, 1921 , Warsaw - April 12, 2001 , Kiev ) was a popular Ukrainian fashion designer in 1950-1970. He created his collections for the Kiev House of Models ( Kiev ). A characteristic feature of creativity was the synthesis of traditional classical cut and ethnic motifs.

Biography
Born in Poland . Before World War II he emigrated to the USSR . While working in Central Asia, he gained local fame among the representatives of the Soviet elite . After the war he moved to Kiev , where he began working at the Kiev House of Fashion Models (KDMO) (established in 1944). For several decades he was one of the leading authors of this house. Mepen’s work had a significant impact on the formation of the post-war landscape of Ukrainian fashion.
Creativity
The collections of Hertz Mepen are traditionally distinguished by the widespread use of ethnic material, which in the Soviet system was often perceived [by whom? ] as one of the forms of expression of free thought. The author had to take into account a large number of specific factors of the system so that his work was realized and saw the light of day. Hertz Mepen successfully managed to combine the creative aspects of the profession and the harsh realities of the planned economy of the USSR . He was one of the regular authors of the Ukrainian fashion publication Beauty and Fashion , which was practically the only source of information on the fashion industry for the whole of Ukraine at that time.
Hertz Mepen is considered [by whom? ] one of the " patriarchs " of Ukrainian fashion. His work influenced the work of many Ukrainian designers of the second half of the XX century.
Specializing in women's outerwear, Hertz Mepen contributed to the formation of her typical features for the entire second half of the 20th century.
