Hurricane St. Jude (also characterized as a storm , see: English St Jude storm ) is an extratropical cyclone that struck Northern Europe at the end of October 2013. Its name was given in honor of the Apostle Judas , whose memory is celebrated on October 28. A hurricane arose in the low pressure zone over the Atlantic and was expected in British Wales in the evening of October 27 [1] .
The speed of the hurricane reached 120 km / h [2] , and above the North Sea - up to 191 km / h [3] . In Denmark the wind speed reached 53 m / s, in Sweden and the Netherlands the wind speed was 42 m / s. [four]
On the night of October 28, northern France ( Brittany and Normandy ) was hit by the elements [5] . Great Britain ( London , East Sussex ) was attacked by elements, as a result of which 4 people were killed [6] . In Kent, a nuclear power plant was shut off due to the elements [7] . At the end of the day he reached Denmark . Wind speed reached 32-37 m / s. Departures of airplanes and trains were canceled, trees were felled, 15 people were hospitalized, 1 died [8] . The hurricane also hit the southwest coast of Sweden , where it was dubbed Simon, and caused a power outage. Closed airports of Malmo and Gothenburg . [9]
On the night of October 29, a hurricane de-energized a number of cities in Latvia ( Ventspils , Kuldiga and Talsi ) [10] and Lithuania [11] . The weather did not pass Estonia as well [12] . Disruptions in power supply due to the overflow of the elements were also observed in Finland ( Kirkkonummi , Siuntio ) [13] Towards dinner, the hurricane reached St. Petersburg in Russia, where it caused a rise in water in the Neva [14] , and a power outage [15] . A hurricane raged in the Pskov [16] , Novgorod [17] , Tver [18] regions and in Karelia (where the wind speed weakened to 17 m / s) [19] . By evening, a weakened cyclone covered the Moscow region (the wind speed here did not exceed 15 m / s). [20]
October 30, in a weakened form, the cyclone reached the Urals . [21]
The cyclone is considered inclement weather in the north of Kazakhstan on November 1. [22] Also on November 1, a hurricane reached Yakutia , where in November a low temperature of about minus 30 ° C is typical. On this day, due to bad weather, it was abnormally warm for Yakutia plus 5 ° C. On November 2, a strongly weakened cyclone reached the Magadan Region , where it caused light snow and a temperature increase of 0 ...- 5 ° C. A little later, the hurricane fell apart.
St. Petersburg
During the hurricane in St. Petersburg , nearly 300 trees, dozens of advertising structures and road signs were tumbled down, roofs were torn from two dozen houses. A large-scale flood was supposed to happen in the city, which did not happen due to the time blocked by the GLC , built in 2011 . [23] [24] During the storm, fallen trees cut off the contact network at the intersection of Svetlanovsky Prospekt and Prospekt Enlightenment , which led to the paralysis of the movement of trams and trolleybuses on Vasilyevsky Island . [25] Also, 2 radio stations were forced to urgently stop their broadcasts. [26] However, the GLC cannot protect St. Petersburg from the water currents arriving from Ladoga , and the water level in the Neva River has risen 111 cm above the ordinary . The waves reached 4 meters in height. [27] In particular, the Smolenka River in the western part of Vasilievsky Island overflowed the banks. [25] According to experts, without a dam, the water level would rise by 260 cm and more than 6,700 buildings would be partially flooded. [28]
