Education

Sheikh Hassan studied at the Art of the 20th Century course at Qatar University in the mid-1980s. At this time, there was little information about Arab contemporary art and there was not a single institution dedicated to Arab contemporary art in the entire Middle East and North Africa region. [4] Sheikh Hassan decided to create his own collection of objects of Arab modern art, patronizing and promoting artists of this direction, and thereby developing his knowledge about it. [five]

Collecting

In 1986, Sheikh Hassan began to collect his own collection of Arabic contemporary art. His first work was the inverted pyramid of the artist Youssef Ahmad . [6] After 26 years, his collection grew to 6,000 pieces of art, acquired primarily from Qatari, Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi artists. Now his collection covers all periods of the development of contemporary art in the Middle East from the 1840s to the present. [four]

In 1994, Sheikh Hassan opened a private museum and began to help and sponsor Arab artists, paying special attention to Iraqi victims of the Gulf War . [4] In 2004, he transferred his collection to the Qatar Foundation, and in 2009 it was placed at the disposal of the Qatar Museum Authority . [five]

Mathaf

When Sheikh Hassan began to collect his collection, his plan was to create an institute or institution that would take care of his collection and provide access to it from researchers, students and art lovers. [6] In December 2010, his plan materialized as a result of the opening of Mathaf: the Arab Museum of Modern Art , the first museum in the Middle East dedicated to this direction in art. The museum now houses the entire collection of Sheikh Hassan. [four]
