Biography
Vladimir Dubyansky studied at Moscow University from 1897 to 1902, passed state exams in 1903 with a diploma of I degree.
Since 1902 - an employee of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden .
In 1912, on behalf of the Russian Geographical Society, Dubyansky founded the Repetek sand station at the Repetek station in Karakum , which he headed until 1918.
Since 1924 he worked in the phytomeliorative branch of the All-Union Institute of Applied Botany and New Cultures . Professor of St. Petersburg State University . In 1930 he was awarded the Russian Geographical Society a gold medal named after Pyotr Petrovich Semenov-Tian-Shansky [3] .
In 1931-1933 - Secretary of the Council of the Sand-Desert Institute, which became part of the Soil Institute. V.V.Dokuchaev Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1933).
In the 1940s, he was an employee of the All-Union Research Institute of Agroforestry and Reclamation , the chairman of the Commission on the Sand Problem under the USSR Council of Ministers.
Dubyansky made many expeditions, exploring the steppes of the south of the European part of Russia and the sandy deserts of Central Asia . The results of these expeditions are summarized by Dubyansky in the monograph "Sandy Desert - Southeastern Kara-Kum, its Natural Areas, the Possibilities of Their Agricultural Use and the Importance for Irrigation" (1928).
The main works in the field of geography and biology of deserts, including: “Vegetation of Russian sand deserts”, “Measures to improve the natural conditions of the working lives of oil field workers in the Embensky district”, “Landscaping of the desert”, “New types of paper raw materials”, “Fastening, afforestation and the development of sand and sandy loam in the European part of the USSR ”,“ Agroforestry measures to protect the Main Turkmenian Canal from sand drifts ”,“ The value of mechanical protection to protect the Ashgabat railway from sand drifts ” [4] .
Dubyansky studied the saxaul forests of Central Asia, medicinal , rubber-bearing and other useful plants ( chiy , chondrilla and others).
As a systematic florist , Dubyansky studied, in particular, the genera Thyme ( Thymus ) and Hyssopus ( Hyssopus ).
In 1911, Vladimir Andreyevich Dubyansky was awarded the gold medal of the name of N. M. Przhevalsky of the Russian Geographical Society for researching the sands of Central Asia and the European part of Russia.
Plant species named after Mordovian Dubyansky ( Echinops dubjanskyi Iljin ), Cornflower Dubyansky ( Centaurea dubjanskyi Iljin ) and Ferula Dubyansky ( Ferula dubjanskyi Korovin ) are named in honor of Vladimir Andreyevich Dubyansky.
