Background

Gleb Ryazansky, married to the sister of Mstislav and Yaropolk, had been supporting them since 1174, when during the exile from Vladimir Mikhail Yuryevich robbed the city and took out the icon of the Virgin Mary from it. However, with the threat of a campaign in Ryazan, Mikhail and Vsevolod, who had established themselves in Northeastern Russia in 1175, had to return the booty.

Mstislav Rostislavich suffered a decisive defeat near Yuryev from Vsevolod on June 27, 1176, and was forced to leave not only Rostov again occupied by him, but also Novgorod. In Novgorod, Vsevolod’s nephew Yaroslav Mstislavich the Red was adopted for reign, named the annals of his son .

Mstislav fled to Ryazan and already in the autumn together with Gleb organized a campaign to Moscow and burned it, and Vsevolod, who opposed them from Vladimir, was met by the Novgorod embassy behind Pereyaslavl near Shernsky forest with a proposal to conduct a joint campaign against Ryazan residents , accordingly postponing it. However, there are no indications of Novgorodians participating in the ensuing battle.

In Kolomna, Vsevolod was joined by the Chernigov princes Oleg and Vladimir Svyatoslavichi with the army, nephew Vladimir Glebovich Pereyaslavsky. Vsevolod came to Kolomna when he found out that Gleb and the Polovtsy had already gone to Vladimir in a different way , and followed him.

Battle Progress

Enemy forces met at Koloksha . Gleb, having already robbed the vicinity of Vladimir and taking prisoners, stood on its eastern shore.

Vsevolod sent the convoys to the coast occupied by the enemy, Gleb sent Mstislav Rostislavich to capture them, and Vsevolod to cover them - Vladimir Glebovich with part of the Vladimir squad to ensure their success. Meanwhile, the main forces of the Vladimir and Chernihiv citizens took a passive position on Pruskovaya Gora.

The main forces of Gleb and Yaropolk, in turn, crossed the river to the west bank for an attack, but when they approached the mountain at a distance of the flight of the arrow, it became known about the defeat and flight of Mstislav. Gleb and his allies, because of the threat of the environment, abandoned the attack and fled, then Vsevolod went on the offensive, the enemy suffered huge losses by the dead and prisoners.

After the battle

On February 20, 1177, the victorious army returned to Vladimir. Vsevolod won the final victory in the struggle for the Vladimir inheritance.

Mstislav, Gleb, his eldest son Roman and many noble boyars of Ryazan were captured. Yaropolk managed to escape and hide in Ryazan land. Then Vsevolod sent an ambassador to Ryazan with the words: " You have our hell, or I’m coming to you ." Ryazans "who went to Voronezh, his yasha and bringing him to Volodymyr ."

Mstislav and Yaropolk were put in a log, and when unrest occurred in Vladimir, they were blinded and released (then taken in Novgorod). Then Yaropolk was once more captured by Vsevolod (in 1180 in Torzhok) and once issued as warring with Vsevolod Olgovich in accordance with peace (1196). Gleb remained in captivity, rejecting the offer of freedom in exchange for a promise to leave Ryazan and leave south, and soon died in prison (1177). An attempt to intercede for him by Mstislav from the Smolensk Rostislavichs, married to his daughter, was unsuccessful. Subsequently, Vsevolod, by repeated interventions, kept the Ryazan principality under its control.
