Ichthiodorulitis

The multi-fin variant of climatius reconstruction based on ichthyodorulite finds

Ichthyodorulites (from the Greek ichthýs - fish , dory - spear and lithos - stone ) - needle-shaped or saber-like fossils, which are considered fin needles of extinct genera of cartilaginous fish ( Chondrichthyes ): sharks , rays , whole-headed ones . Such residues are also characteristic of acanthodes (for example, for climatius ).

Usually ichthyodorulites are found isolated from other parts of the skeleton of fish and only occasionally accompanied by teeth ; therefore, the structure of those organisms, some of which are ichthyodorulites, and their classification are not well established. The generic names of those fish that are known only by ichthyodorulites are usually given the ending "acanthus". These include, for example, the genera Ctenacanthus , Gyracanthus , Stenacanthus and many others.

Ichthyodorulites are found in sediments of all geological systems, starting from the Silurian , but mainly in the formations of the Paleozoic group of Western Europe, North America and Russia.

The study of ichthyodorulites was much done by the Swiss natural scientist L. Agassis , as well as Russian scientists Kh. I. Pander , G. E. Shchurovsky , G. A. Trautshold and A. A. Foreigners [1] .
