After the defeat of the allied Lithuanian-Russian army at Jakobstadt on July 25 ( August 5 ), 1704, the Saxon elector and Polish king August II entered into an alliance treaty with the Russian Tsar Peter I , according to which Russia was to provide an auxiliary corps to the Commonwealth .
On August 20, 1704, General A. I. Repnin received orders to move from near Narva to Lithuania with 6 infantry and 6 dragoon regiments. In September, Repnin arrived in Polotsk with infantry and fortified the fortress. Dragoons moved to the Bourses , but the Bourses have already surrendered to the Swedes.
Meanwhile, the Swedish general A. L. Levengaupt , considering the campaign over, began to winter in Courland, K. Sapega went to Vilna to winter in Lithuania.
Upon learning of the separation of Swedes and Lithuanians from Sapega (and K. Sapega himself left his army), the Lithuanian army of M. Vishnevetsky, to which the Russian dragoon regiment G.K.Fluga joined, attacked the Sapega army on November 1, 1704 (in the absence of Casimir Sapega Minsk headman K.S. Zavish and Bobruisk headman Y. K. Sapieha ) and defeated him.
