He served as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Bolivia when President Mamerto Urrilagoitia committed a military coup against himself, as a result of which Balivian Rojas took over as president. Balivian was the last hope of the oligarchic circles to remain in power, but the situation has already gone out of control. Despite the introduction of curfews, exiled by some opposition leaders, riots continued in the country.
It came to the point that the Minister of Government, General Antonio Seleme, said that he secretly supported the conspirators, who at that time were headed by Hernan Siles Suaso ( Paz Estensoro was in exile in Argentina). This was the catalyst for the April events of 1952, which became known as the National Revolution. This revolution was a turning point in the history of the country. Many military sided with the rebels. As a result of the armed confrontation, the president was forced to resign and seek political asylum at the Chilean embassy.
