Vasiliev, Yuri Sergeevich (historian)

Born December 28, 1939 in the village of Putilovo, Mginsky District, Leningrad Region, in a family of teachers ^[1] . In 1941, the family was evacuated to the Velsky district of the Arkhangelsk region . In 1947, he began to study at the Khozminsky incomplete secondary school of the Velsky district . In 1957 he graduated from Shenkur Secondary School and entered the Faculty of History and Philology of the Arkhangelsk State Pedagogical Institute named after MV Lomonosov . After graduating from three courses, he transferred to the correspondence department. In 1960, while still studying at the correspondence department, he began working as a teacher of the Russian language and literature of the Kodinsky 8-year school of the Onega district of the Arkhangelsk region . After graduating from the institute in 1962, he was appointed director of this school and worked in this position until 1968. As a director, he initiated the construction of a new school building, achieved the acquisition of furniture, sports equipment, training and visual aids ^[1] .
In 1970 he graduated from graduate school at Leningrad State University , and in 1971 he defended his thesis. In 1969-1975 he taught at the Department of History of the USSR at the Vologda State Pedagogical Institute (assistant in 1969-1972, senior lecturer in 1972-1973 and associate professor in 1973-1975). In 1975-1981, he worked at the Department of History of the USSR, Syktyvkar State University (senior lecturer in 1975-1976, associate professor in 1976-1980 and senior researcher in 1980-1981). In 1981, he returned to the Department of History of the USSR VGPI , where he taught courses on domestic history, historiography, auxiliary historical disciplines (paleography, chronology, metrology, source studies) ^[1] . In 1988-1993 he headed the Union of Local Lore Vologda Region ^{[ 2]} . In 1990-1995 he was the dean of the Faculty of History of VGPI ^[3] . He completed teaching activities in 2006 ^[1] .

In 1971, under the guidance of Professor A. L. Shapiro, he defended his thesis “Feudal tenure and farming in the Vazhsky land in the 15th-17th centuries” ^[4] . During his teaching work at universities, he organized and headed several archaeographic expeditions (3 in the Komi Territory , 5 in the Vologda Oblast ), 3 of them together with the expeditions of the USSR Academy of Sciences library led by A. A. Amosov . The materials obtained during the expeditions were transferred to Syktyvkar State University and the Vologda Regional Museum of Local Lore ^[1] .

He took part in the organizational work and publication of research works and sources within the framework of the Problem Association for the Agrarian History of the European North of the USSR and the Northern Branch of the Archaeographic Commission of the USSR Academy of Sciences . He was the editor-in-chief of the historical and local lore almanacs "Belozerye" ^{[5] [6] [7]} and a number of "Northern archaeographic collections".

He did a great job of putting into circulation written sources of unselected funds of the following archives:

• State Archive of the Arkhangelsk Region (fund of the Vazhsky Theological Monastery)
• State Archive of the Komi Republic (museum fund)
• State Archive of the Vologda Oblast. Here he was identified the earliest known lip-letters (Velskaya lips-letter of 1539) and materials about the last days of Stepan Razin ^[1] .

He participated in the preparation and holding of scientific and local history conferences of a number of museums of the Arkhangelsk (Velsky, Shenkur and Ustyansky) and Vologda regions (Verkhovazhsky Museum) and the subsequent publication of their materials: 3 collections of the Velsk Museum of Local Lore ^{[8] [9] [10]} , 3 collections of Shenkur Museum of Local Lore and one collection of the Verkhovazhsky and Ustyansky Museum.
