Rudolf Smidts ( Dutch: Rudolf Smidts ; August 12, 1963 , Nivelle , Belgium ) - former Belgian footballer , defender known for playing for Antwerp and the Belgian national team . Participant in the World Championships 1986 , 1990 and 1994 , as well as the 1984 European Championship .

Club career

Smidts is a student of the Antwerp club. In 1984, he made his debut for a team in the Jupe League . He spent 13 seasons at the club, becoming one of the team’s symbols. As part of Antwerp, Rudy won the Belgian Cup , and in the 1992/1993 season reached the finals of the Cup Winners' Cup . In 1997, he moved to Charleroi , where he performed for one season. In 1998, Smidts signed a contract with Eken , but a year after merging with the Beershot team, he moved with his club to his native Antwerp . In 2000, Rudi moved to Mechelen . After playing two seasons, he signed an annual agreement with the club of the second division of Schoten , where he ended his career after the end of the contract.

International Career

On February 9, 1992, in the 1994 World Cup qualifier against the Czechoslovak team, Smidts made his debut for the Belgian national team . On October 14, in a match against Romania, Rudi scored the first goal for the national team [1] .

In 1994, Smidts took part in the US World Cup . At the tournament, he played in meetings against the teams of Saudi Arabia [2] , Germany [3] , the Netherlands [4] and Morocco [5] .
