Grumbach quarrel

Commemorative Taler of 1557.

Grumbachsche quarrel ( German: Grumbachsche Händel ) - an episode in the history of Ernestine Wettins , which led to the fact that in 1567 the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach Johann-Frederick II Middle was imprisoned for life.

In 1485, as a result of the Leipzig partition , the Vettin house was divided into Ernestine and Albertine lines . the title of Elector of Saxony at the same time remained behind the older, Ernestine line. In 1547, Elector Johann-Frederick the Magnanimous was defeated at Mülberg by Emperor Charles V and lost the Schmalkalden War . Under the terms of the electorate in Saxony passed to the Albertine line. After the death of Johann-Friedrich in 1554, his three sons - Johann-Frederick II the Middle , Johann Wilhelm and Johann-Frederick III the Younger - first ruled together. After the death of his younger brother in 1565, the elders made a division of the land. Johann Friedrich received Coburg and Eisenach , and Johann Wilhelm received Weimar .

Johann Friedrich chose Gotha as his residence. His goal was to regain the title of elector lost by his father. On the basis of this idea, he became close to the knight Wilhelm Grumbach , a well-known troublemaker. A certain “angel-viewer” Hans Tauzenshion claimed that angels appeared to him and predicted the revival of the Ernest home. This, according to Grumbach, meant that the desired goal could be achieved without the use of military force. Under Emperor Maximilian II , in connection with the repeated refusal to extradite Grumbach, Johann-Friedrich was sentenced to expulsion from the empire ( German: Reichsacht ). Elector Augustus from the Albertine line was appointed the executor of this imperial execution . His troops besieged the Gothic . The besieged brother Johann Wilhelm also joined the execution.

In the end, Johann-Friedrich was forced to surrender. In captivity in Austria, he spent 29 years before his death. Grumbach was quartered in the market square of Gotha. Elector August, on income from Gotha, struck a commemorative thaler on his Dresden with a deliberately enlarged Elector’s shield and Latin inscription.

The lands of Johann-Friedrich were under the control of his brother until 1572, when they were transferred to the sons of Johann-Friedrich.

The history of this conflict in four volumes in 1869 - 1870 was published by .
